0.5D = 1/2At
t = 0.5D/0.5A = D/A
t = √D/A = time for 1st car to reach max speed of At
time for car to travel 0.5D at const speed = At:
const speed = At = A√D/A = √A(D/A) = √AD
time for car to travel 0.5D at const speed = 0.5D/√AD
Total time for 1st car to finish race = √D/A + 0.5D/√AD ANS (a)

0.75D = 1/2at
t = 0.75D/0.5a = 1.5D/a
t = √1.5D/a = time for 2nd car to reach max speed of at
max speed = at = a√1.5D/a = √a(1.5D/a) = √1.5Da
time for 2nd car to travel 0.25D at const speed = 0.25D/√1.5Da
Total time for 2nd car to finish race = √1.5D/a + 0.25D/√1.5Da ANS (b)

IF race is a tie, as distance is the same for both, total times ans (a) & (b) are equal:
√D/A + 0.5D/√AD = √1.5D/a + 0.25D/√1.5Da
